American stars Matt Reed and Sarah Haskins defeated top international fields to take home $10,000 apiece today at the 25th anniversary St. Anthony’s Triathlon in St. Petersburg.
The men
Emphasizing that his upset win in the Olympic Trials last week at Tuscaloosa was no fluke, Reed outdueled top U.S. rival Andy Potts on the run for third St. Anthony’s victory Sunday in St. Petersburg.
“I’m on a roll,” said Reed, the 33-year-old, 6-foot 5-inch New Zealand native who celebrated his recent American citizenship with a chance to represent the red white and blue in the Olympics. “I’m really happy with how I’m going, but it’s even better that I still see room to improve.”
Reed and Potts, who finished second to Reed at Tuscaloosa, broke out to a minute lead out of the water, added another 50 seconds on chief rival Greg Bennett on the bike.
“I tried hard to drop Andy at the start of the bike,” said Reed. “But all credit to him, he stuck with me and made a great race of it.”

Don’t forget early registration for the 2008 NYC triathlon opens today for USAT members….
USAT members have an exclusive 48 hours to enter the Nautica New York City Triathlon, America’s premier Olympic distance race. Member registration opens October 30 at 12:01 am EST.
For race information.
Greg Bennett (AUS) won yesterday’s Toyota US Open in Dallas, Texas to claim $60,000 for winning the event. He garnered an additional $60,000 for taking the series’ points championship and another $300,000 for sweeping the series - all told a $420,000 day.
Team Bennett certainly has been having a successful year… From the Lifetime Fitness Triathlon series wins, Bennett has taken in $508,000 in 2007. Laura, his wife, won the BG Des Moines Triathlon ($200,000 top prize and Hummer) and earned a spot on the 2008 US Olympic team at the BG Beijing World Cup.
On the women’s side, Emma Snowsill was the favorite going in, having won three of the previous four races in the series, but the surprise win went to Sarah Haskins with a time of 1:55:45 and a $60,000 prize check.
Snowsill, who acknowledged being a bit under the weather, finished in fourth, although her consolation was a $60,000 prize for taking the overall points title.
Haskins now focuses her attention on earning her Olympics berth. At the World Cup triathlon in Beijing in September she was the second place American, so she needs strong finishes at the next qualifying races in early 2008.
“It’s definitely a confidence builder for qualifying for Beijing,” Haskins said.

Aaron Scheidies, whom we wrote about the other day, accomplished his dream yesterday of breaking the 2 hour Olympic distance record for a disabled athlete in 1 hour, 58 minutes, 8 seconds in Dallas. Scheidies and his guide, Ben Collins, finished 48th overall, about 14 minutes behind race winner Greg Bennett. His previous Olympic-distance PR was 2:03. “It’s amazing,” Scheidies said, still in disbelief. “This has been my goal for a long time, and I had to have a perfect race to do it.”
It was the first time Aaron raced with partner Collins. Scheidies is a Michigan State graduate who lives in Seattle. He suffers from juvenile macular degeneration, a condition that’s left him legally blind since fourth grade.
Stefano Baldini, 2004 Olympic Games gold medalist, announced Thursday that he will run in the November 4, 2007 event.
At the Athens Olympic race, Baldini pulled away from American Meb Keflezighi at the end of the race to win the gold. He’s also won two bronze medals at the World Championships Marathon (2001, 2003) and two gold medals at the European Championships (1998,2006).He’s also been very successful at New York, with two top-five finishes in his five previous appearances.
Baldini joins several other former NYC marathon winners, last year’s surprise winner Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil (2006), Hendrick Ramaala of South Africa (2004), and Kenyans Martin Lel (2003) and Rodgers Rop (2002).
Three time blind world champion Aaron Scheidies goes for a world record in Dallas at the Toyota U.S. Open Triathlon this Sunday. The 25 year old Michigan native teams with USAT overall champ Ben Collins in his attempt to be the first blind athlete to break the 2 hour mark. Aaron recently set a 2:03 PR in New York City.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend this year (next year!) but here’s part one of a continuing series this week about what others are reporting on from the show ….
Bike Radar reports FSA is introducing a new hydration system that mounts under you aerobars - of course it’s carbon… dual reserviors and expected in market December with MSRP of about $100. Details
Bicycle reports that Javelin has a pretty cool carbon fiber bike hand designed by John Cobb, master of all things aero. The new frames (Torgiano and Lugano) are built in Italy. Apparently Cobb designed each tube separately and then fit the whole bit together into what Bicycling describes as a “cohesive and very sleek looking frame”.
If you’re interested, you’re probably gonna have to break open that piggy bank…the Lugano runs $5,800 frame and fork, and $7,200 as a full custom.
This group does a wonderful job and now they need our help. Please pass the word and do what you can…
A fire at the foundation’s main office on Saturday destroyed an estimated $600,000 worth of property, equipment and banners which had been donated for their largest annual fundraiser - the 14th annual San Diego Triathlon Challenge in La Jolla on Oct. 28.
Since it began in 1994, the foundation has raised more than $11 million that it gives in grants to physically challenged athletes worldwide. In many cases, the money is used to buy wheelchairs and prostheses.
Virginia Tinley, the foundation’s executive director, hopes insurance will cover most of the damage, but is concerned that with the event just weeks away, they may not be able to replace the donated supplies for the fundraiser in time.
