Race Results: 2008 St. Anthony’s Triathlon

American stars Matt Reed and Sarah Haskins defeated top international fields to take home $10,000 apiece today at the 25th anniversary St. Anthony’s Triathlon in St. Petersburg.

Emphasizing that his upset win in the Olympic Trials last week at Tuscaloosa was no fluke, Reed outdueled top U.S. rival Andy Potts on the run for third St. Anthony’s victory Sunday in St. Petersburg.
“I’m on a roll,” said Reed, the 33-year-old, 6-foot 5-inch New Zealand native who celebrated his recent American citizenship with a chance to represent the red white and blue in the Olympics. “I’m really happy with how I’m going, but it’s even better that I still see room to improve.”
Reed and Potts, who finished second to Reed at Tuscaloosa, broke out to a minute lead out of the water, added another 50 seconds on chief rival Greg Bennett on the bike.
“I tried hard to drop Andy at the start of the bike,” said Reed. “But all credit to him, he stuck with me and made a great race of it.”

Tour de Georgia - Final Results

ATLANTA — Kanstantin Sivtsov kept his tires full Sunday. The rest was easy.
Sivtsov, competing in his first race in the United States, survived a rash of flat tires on the streets of Atlanta to win the Tour de Georgia.
Sivtsov won the week-long Georgia race as his Team High Road teammate Greg Henderson won the 63-mile final stage — 10 laps on a 6.3-mile course.
The course in downtown Atlanta was swept before the race, but late-morning rain washed debris back onto the streets, possibly including broken glass from the March 14 tornado that hit downtown Atlanta. Windows in high-rise hotels and office buildings near Centennial Olympic Park — the site of Sunday’s start and finish — are still being replaced.
According to one estimate, there were 17 flat tires in the first 30 minutes of Sunday’s final stage.
“The problem was the rain was kicking up a lot of debris on the road,” Henderson said. “As the course dried out a little more, that stuff doesn’t stick to your tires as much.”

Race Results: 2008 Women’s Tongyeong BG Triathlon World Cup

New Zealand’s Beijing-bound Samantha Warriner claimed her sixth world cup title today in the 2008 Tongyeong BG Triathlon World Cup, the 198th world cup ever staged in ITU’s history. A strong swim put the top Kiwi at the front of the group and enabled her to utilize her running speed to cruise to gold medal in a time of 1 hour 49 minutes and 49 seconds. In second place was young Hollie Avil of Great Britain, 9 seconds back. This is the second podium in as many races for the 2007 Junior champion Avil. In third, following a strong finish to 2007, was Vendula Frintova of the Czech Republic, a further 22 seconds down.
“I’m pretty stoked,” said the 36-year old Warriner. “I was feeling good. In New Plymouth I made lots of mistakes. I made sure not to make the same mistakes here and it worked.”
“It’s just great to run with other athletes – like Sam [Warriner],” said the 18-year old Avil, with Tongyeong being only her second Olympic distance race ever. “I’ve never got to run with her before…it was a quick run today, it was ever more experience, more learning in the bag and I’m just loving it out there.”

Race Results: 2008 Men’s Tongyeong BG Triathlon World Cup

2006 Triathlon World Champion, Tim Don of Great Britain, won the Tongyeong BG Triathlon World Cup today in South Korea, the 198th world cup in ITU’s history. The fleet-footed Don ran away from the competition over the final stages of the race to claim the fifth world cup win of his career in a time of 1 hour 38 minutes and 14 seconds. In second position, only six seconds behind, Athens Olympic silver medalist Bevan Docherty of New Zealand out-sprinted Germany’s Jan Frodeno in a photo finish result. Don continues his push to qualify for the Beijing Olympic Games as he shows great form heading into next month’s final selection race at the Madrid BG Triathlon World Cup, moving to first in the BG Triathlon World Cup rankings.
“I always give 100% and I was so pleased to get on the top of the podium,” commented the 30-year old Brit known to his friends as ‘The Don’.

Tour de Georgia - Stage Four Results

Starting the day one man down after Timmy Duggan’s frightful crash on Wednesday, an inspired Slipstream-Chipotle won the Tour de Georgia’s stage 4 team time trial Thursday at the Road Atlanta automotive raceway.
Slipstream rode four laps of Road Atlanta’s rolling 2.5-mile racetrack in 19:36, 3.41 seconds faster than Astana, at an average speed of 29.14 miles per hour.
The High Road team of race leader Greg Henderson finished third, 5.2 seconds back. Henderson retained the race lead, and because of time bonuses during the first three stages now sits 15 seconds ahead of race favorites Tom Danielson and Trent Lowe and 19 seconds ahead of race favorite Levi Leipheimer.

Race Preview: Tongyeong - BG Triathlon World Cup race #4

The BG Triathlon World Cup series heads to South Korea this Saturday for the first time since 2004. As one of just six world cup events before the end of ITU Olympic qualifying, Tongyeong welcomes a world class field that is expected to include a number of contenders including Beijing bound Jan Frodeno of Germany, four-time world cup winner Rasmus Henning of Denmark, Olympic silver medalist Bevan Docherty and 2006 world champion Tim Don of Great Britain. Headlining the women’s field are Olympic bound athletes prepping for Beijing including five-time World Cup winner Samantha Warriner of New Zealand, and German Ricarda Lisk. The 2006 junior world champion Kirsten Sweetland from Canada opens her 2008 world cup season in Tongyeong as will teammate Lauren Groves who’s coming off a silver medal performance at the PATCO Pan American Championships in Mazatlan, Mexico. Also in the field will be Great Britain’s promising youngster Hollie Avil who will compete in just her elite world cup. Also at stake for the athletes is a US$100,000 prize purse. After diving off a pontoon, athletes will complete a 2-lap 1.5-kilometer ocean swim. At the end of the first lap, athletes will have to come out on the pontoon and dive back in. Wetsuits are expected as water temperature will be between 15 and 17 degrees Celsius. Out of the water athletes will cycle 5 laps around an 8-kilometer loop that includes a pair of hills. Off the bike, it’s onto a flat 10-kilometer run course.

Tour de Georgia - Stage Three Results

After two slight misfires, High Road’s heavy artillery got its coordinates dialed Wednesday, firing Greg Henderson into the yellow jersey with an explosive win on stage 3 of the Tour de Georgia. Toyota-United’s Ivan Dominguez, winner of stage 1, lost the leader’s jersey when he came off the group in the hilly closing circuits of Gainesville.
With less than a kilometer to go, George Hincapie wound up High Road’s lead-out with Tour Down Under winner André Greipel on his wheel. Greipel, a big sprinter himself, took over right before the crest of a hill at 300 meters to go. Henderson jumped on the fast, downhill finish and bombed across the line, Greipel on his flank and Slipstream-Chipotle’s Tyler Farrar just behind for third.

Bank of America Chicago Marathon registration has closed
Bank of America announced today that registration for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon has closed as 45,000 runners have signed on to complete the 26.2-mile race, marking the event’s established capacity. A limited number of entries are still available through affiliated charities and tour groups.“It is encouraging and rewarding to see the intense commitment from running enthusiasts across the globe registering for this race more than six months in advance,” said Bank of America Illinois Market President David Rudis. “We are proud to match their enthusiasm by continuing the tradition of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, clearly one of the greatest running events in the world.”
Runners who missed the deadline and are still interested in registering for the 31st running of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon may do so through one of the event’s 65 charity partners or affiliated international tour groups. More information on entries available through these organizations is available on the event web site, chicagomarathon.com.
Since its inception in 1977 with 4,200 registered participants, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon has grown to a field of 45,000 runners attracting 1.5 million spectators and generating more than $10.5 million for charity in 2007.
The 2008 Bank of America Chicago Marathon will start and finish in Chicago’s Grant Park beginning at 8 a.m. on Sunday, October 12. Registration opened to the public on February 1 and closed today when the participant capacity of 45,000 was reached. In advance of the race, a two-day Health & Fitness Expo will be held at McCormick Place on Friday, October 10 and Saturday, October 11. TYR unveils its challenger to Speedo’s new LZR Racer suit

LOS ANGELES (AP) -A new challenger to the Speedo LZR Racer swimsuit is making its debut at the French Olympic trials this week.
TYR Sport is unveiling its Tracer Rise suit, which some swimmers have been competing in since January. Speedo unveiled its suit in February. The suits are made of polyurethane woven fabric that is water-repellant and lightweight.
The LZR Racer has ultrasonically bonded seams to help reduce drag, while the Tracer Rise has compression panels that contour certain muscle groups to control movement.
Speedo claims its suit can improve performance by up to 2 percent. TYR, based in Huntington Beach, claims the improvement of its suit is up to 4 percent.
“This technology hasn’t been seen before in the sport of swimming,” said Steve Furniss, TYR co-founder and a 1972 Olympic swimming medalist. “Tracer Rise propels the sport into an entirely new direction by pushing the innovation envelope. Fast just got faster.”
French swimmer Amaury Leveaux won the 200-meter freestyle on Tuesday wearing a Tracer. His time of 1 minute, 46.54 seconds is second-fastest in the world this year, behind the 1:45.71 by world record holder Michael Phelps wearing a Speedo suit in February.
Earlier this month, American Mary DeScenza, wearing a Tracer, broke Mary T. Meagher’s U.S. record in the 200 butterfly by more than a second.

Tour de Georgia - Stage Two Results

A tender hand didn’t slow CSC’s J.J. Haedo in the sprint finale of the second stage of the Tour de Georgia. Haedo took a convincing win in Augusta ahead of High Road’s Greg Henderson, stage 1 winner Ivan Dominguez (Toyota-United) and Tyler Farrar (Slipstream-Chipotle).
Just a week out of a cast, Haedo is riding Georgia with his left hand heavily taped.
Tuesday’s flat to rolling stage from Statesboro concluded after two, 5-mile laps of Augusta that ventured across the Savannah River into South Carolina.
A few riders went down coming into the final corner, but the crash occurred about 15 riders back and didn’t disrupt the contenders. Toyota’s Henk Vogels and Dominique Rollin led out the sprint from almost 1km to go. Rollin took Dominguez out of the last corner, and Dominguez jumped with 200m to go. It was just a little too soon. After waiting on the wheel for a few pedal strokes, Haedo launched past Dominguez so fast that the pair joked afterwards about Dominguez’s helmet getting blown off.
By finishing third, Dominguez keeps the leader’s jersey for another day.
