Emma Moffatt and Erin Densham have won a four-way battle to join Emma Snowsill as Australia’s women’s triathletes at the Beijing Olympics.

Triathlon Australia (TA) announced the athletes they will nominate to the Australian Olympic Committee, with Moffatt and Densham getting the nod over Felicity Abram and Annabel Luxford.

Snowsill was pre-selected by TA last year, as were men’s representatives Brad Kahlefeldt and Courtney Atkinson.

Greg Bennett was provisionally named as the third men’s team member, subject to Australia meeting the International Triathlon Union requirements by June 8 to have a full squad of three.

As outlined in Triathlon Australia’s Olympic nomination criteria, the Nomination Team will not be presented to the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) for consideration for selection until the beginning of July. The nomination team have continuing obligations of ongoing fitness, injury and illness monitoring between now and 4 July 2008.

The Chairman of Selectors, Peter Fitzgerald commented today: “As always in Triathlon, because of Australia’s depth in the sport, the selection of athletes to be nominated to the AOC was a difficult one. The process involved lengthy informed debate amongst the selectors, resulting in a very close call on the women’s team. Selectors are satisfied that those athletes chosen represent Australia’s best prospects of success in Beijing.”

The Nomination Team will be heading to Melbourne this weekend for a 2-day camp; briefings will be conducted as well as medical screenings. Following the camp most of the athletes will be travelling overseas to prepare for their Olympic campaign.
