A record crowd of triathletes is expected Sunday at the XTERRA Miami Triad Crush, part of the Ameriprise Financial South Florida Triathlon Series.
With dirt trails and riverways at Oleta State Recreation Area in North Miami Beach, the off-road sprint and long course triathlons and sprint duathlon will give athletes a change of scenery from flat courses, ocean and lake swims.
“It’s certainly not what triathletes are used to, but that’s what makes it so fun,” said series director Rob Childers, who also will compete.
Only the long course triathlon will earn points for those athletes looking to be ranked in the region by XTERRA. There is race-day registration and packet pickup from 6-7 a.m. The short-course triathlon (400-meter inlet swim, 15K off-road bike, 5K off-road run including water crossings) begins at 7:30 a.m., the duathlon (1.5K run, some on the beach; 15K off-road bike, 5K run with water crossings) 7:33 a.m. and long-course triathlon (1,200-meter swim, 30K bike, 5K run with water crossings) 8:30 a.m.
