Macca Wins!

On his sixth attempt at the big one, Chris McCormack, finally accomplished what he said he could back in 2002 - he won the Ford Ironman World Championship with a time of 8:15:34. (all times are unofficial)

The women’s race was a stunning win by Chrissie Wellington from Great Britain with a winning time of 9:08:45. This was her Ironman Hawaii debut following her first iron distance race a short seven weeks ago in Ironman Korea.

Craig Alexander took second in 8:19:04 and Torbjorn Sindballe finished third in 8:21:30.

Samantha McGlone took second with a 9:14:04 and Kate Major third in 9:19:13.

It was a day that saw many of the top competitors DNF for health reasons:

Normann Stadler, last year’s winner and Macca’s chief rival was spotted throwing up during the bike and ultimately pulled over and was loaded onto a stretcher at mile 55 of the bike leg.

Faris Al-Sultan, 2005’s winner didn’t start due to reported ‘gastro’ issues.

Natascha Badmann apparently had a cycling mishap due to an errant motorist which caused her to wreck.

Michellie Jones, defending women’s champ dropped for medical reasons.
