Haile Gebrselassie, from Ethiopia, rocked the Berlin Marathon to win in a new world record time of 2:04.26, 29 seconds faster than the prior record, set by Paul Tergat four years ago.
In the women’s race, favorite Gete Wami, also from Ethiopia, defended her title with a 2:23:17.
An estimated million spectators watched the 40,000 runners on a course which has become the place to set world records (this marks the third time a record was set on the course).
